Friday 1st December - Kirkby Stephen Christmas Lights switch on -Festive Fun for all the Family!
The swich-on event for the Christmas Lights display will be from 5.45pm.
The wintery weather has been a challenge at the last few switch-on events, so this year we are going to try something different. We've been invited to hold the pre-switch on events in the Parish Church which will also allow us to use the church's PA system. We'll be holding the usual events, Carol singing supported by the Silver Band, singing by Kirkby Stephen Primary School, the prize giving for the Christmas window competition and drawing of the Rotary raffle inside the church. We'll ask people to step outside when it is time for the switch on of the lights.

- completing the removal of ash saplings from the track-bed
- strimming/raking the rockrose embankment to clear it of regenerating ash, bramble & hazel
- raking strimmed vegetation clear of the herb-rich grassland on rockrose embankment
- strimming raspberry, rosebay willowherb within Bighill Cutting
- transplanting more melancholy thistle - courtesy of Simon - from his garden
- raking nettle roots out of the track-bed
- burning ash saplings and nettle roots
Directions - If you would like to volunteer, please head for the village of Winton near Kirkby Stephen. The Bay Horse Inn (CA17 4HS) lies at the heart of the village. From there take the hill road: after a km (1/2 mile), take the R hand road to Rookby Scarth and climb for another km until you come to where the Kirkby Stephen - Stainmore railway once bridged the road at the entrance to Rookby Scarth farm. (OS Explorer map OL19, grid reference NY 798 101). Please do not obstruct the upper side of the entrance track: parking should be on the opposite downslope verge. From there, climb the stone-steps on the South side of the road onto the old railway track-bed and walk up to a km along the footpath until you encounter the volunteers working. Please make yourself known.
Sunday 3rd December - Santa's Here! - The Pennine Hotel, Kirkby Stephen
Santa will be popping into the Pennine to say `Hello'. Tickets are £1.00 and can be bought in advance to include a Santa Wish List to bring along on the day. All well behaved children will receive an early gift from Santa. We will also have a hearty, belly warming food on offer.
Sunday 3rd December - Family Night Walk - meet Milleniun Bridge, Stenkrith Park, Kirkby Stephen
Lit by a supermoon (if it's not too cloudy!) we'll explore the Northern Trust Viaduct Walk and discover the countryside night life along the way. All ages are welcome (children must be accompanied) and the walk is accessible for pushchairs and wheelchairs.
Meets 5.30pm Cost - pay what you feel.
Monday 4th December - Cumbria Wildlife Trust - `The Work of the Wild Trout Trust' - The Friends Meeting House, Kirkby Stephen

Gareth Pedley, Conservation Officer with the Wild Trout Trust, will speak about the work of the Trust in helping to preserve wild fish populations and their habitat.
The CWT Upper Eden Support Group runs a variety of activities to support the Trust's work. Everyone is welcome to join us for our talks, which take place at The Friends Meeting House, 48A High St, Kirkby Stephen, CA17 4SH.

Sunday 17th December - Conservation Day at Smardale Gill Nature Reserve
10.30am to 3.30pm
We'll be coppicing and brash-burning along the disused railway line to maintain an open ride for butterflies. This will encourage the diverse woodland ground flora to proliferate and keep the footpath open for visitors.
This is the last Smardale work party until after Christmas - bring spuds or other fire offerings for a celebratory skoff.
